Hunger among U.S. children skyrockets in 2007

advertisement

The department's annual report on food security showed that during 2007 the number of children who suffered a substantial disruption in the amount of food they typically eat was more than 50 percent above the 430,000 in 2006 and the largest figure since 716,000 in 1998.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

If all  the children were to move to wall street, they might get a bail-out.

Do you think this statistic will be framed in the GW Bush library?

I hope he is ashamed of himself as he parties his way into retirement.

Do you think this will make up the vine?

Do you think the children of single mothers are on the radar?

Any time I get involved in a conversation about the children (of single mothers) I am so talked down.............when I speak the truth of my situation, and the situation of single mothers anywhere...........I am told I am 'condesending' and a trouble maker, or distracting from 'polite' discussion.  At times, it is so obvious, just how unimportant we are out here.........I can barely believe that I am still a quailifiing american.

today is a tough day...........I have been pointing at this for 10 years.

I don't think that it will. I  see TWO comment. Now if this were a Palin thread it would be about 100 or comments.

Do you think this statistic will be framed in the GW Bush library? NO

I hope he is ashamed of himself as he parties his way into retirement.  He should be.

Amazing how easy it is for people to look the other way when they see healdines like this one, huh?

They know deep down that they themselves are indirectly responsible for this atrocity and can't seem to face it.

This is Bush's legacy but it is ours too.

This is because I don't think he feels he has done anything wrong. Nothing was  wrong with your statement. I hope he is having sleepless nights.

I think he sleeps just fine.  ONe has to have the kind of conscienous that allows one to feel badly for those that stuggle....he shows time and again that the stuggling american is not even on his radar.  But, the headlines are showing that those around him are now coming closer and closer to being held accountable.  Cheney, Rove and Gonzalez (sp).  I felt a little better yesterday, but wait to see it go all the way to charges against them.

They have not spoken of those who are hungry, or the hundreds of thousands who work part time jobs and when they lose them are not eleigable for unemployment.

Let us see how long we have to wait for Laura Bush. The Untold Story Of My Husband. His wife has been working on hunger around the over- seas. Not much state-side.

I am told I am ... distracting from 'polite' discussion.

I think if someone said that to me on this topic, I'd would lose my very Irish temper.  Talking about hunger, especially as it relates to kids, may not be "polite conversation," but it's an essential discussion.  We can't start to fix a problem until we define it and get enough other people to care.

hmmmm, well let nail the problem down as best we can (As amateurs that is).  Economy/ Jobs ---------> China,  Oil / ethanol ------> rising food prices

Blame Big Oil, and corporations looking for lower wage earners; that is the typical propaganda...

I don't care where is happens, as long as it happens and starts making a difference in mortality.  Otherwise the other scenerio starts to look reasonable........that's frightening.

      ever google "useless eaters"?
